History The history of the 6th and B garden dates back to 1982. Learn more about who we are and how we came to be...by David Rougé, historian...

Early Lower East Side New York City history... until the colonial era, the site was a salt marsh, an arm of the East River. These coastal wetlands provided cover for waterfowl. These marshes were later filled in, and by 1845 the first buildings had appeared on the site, providing housing for tradesmen and artisans.

In the mid 80's,The 6th & B Garden became an official 501 (c)3 not-for-profit organization, and in 1996, thanks to tremendous help from The Trust for Public Land, we became a permanent garden within New York City's open space system under City of New York Parks and Recreation Green Thumb Program. Our fence, which was designed by garden members, represents the members' "hands-on" contributions in creating the garden.
